Obstetric anal sphincter rupture (OASR) sustained dur-ing vaginal delivery is the most common cause of anal incontinence in women, and it has serious and long-term effects on women's health and quality of life [1]. Occur-rences of OASR vary widely not only between countries, being 0.9% in 2007 in Finland [2], 1.8% in England and New students International Desk Academic matters & support IT services & support Careers Service Study abroad opportunities Become an international mentor Represent & promote LU Health care Financial matters LU Accommodation tenants Options for learning Swedish Current doctoral students When leaving LU and Sweden Coronavirus – info for students The most important risk factor for fecal incontinence in women is traumatic vaginal delivery causing third- or fourth-degree anal sphincter rupture. 2003-11-01 · There were 76,651 parous women (5.1%) with a history of sphincter rupture in a previous delivery, of which 26,521 women (34.6%) with preexisting AI were excluded from the analysis. Cesarean delivery would be required in the remaining 50,130 continent women to prevent 22,107 new cases of AI (44.1%), for a ratio of 2.3 additional cesarean deliveries, to prevent one new case of AI. BACKGROUND Anal sphincter rupture is a serious complication of vaginal delivery and almost half the affected women have persistent defecatory symptoms despite adequate primary repair. During the past decade, the incidence of anal sphincter ruptures has been increasing in Sweden and is currently estimated to occur in 2.5% of vaginal deliveries. The aim of the study was to report the frequency Obstetric anal sphincter injury is assumed to be the most important risk factor for female anal incontinence. – Large and consistent rupture rate variations between the Nordic countries and between delivery units in Norway. Thirty‐eight women with rupture of the anal sphincter occurring during childbirth were followed for 3–12 months. Nineteen had complete rupture of the external and sphincter, 14 had a lesion involving more than half of the sphincter muscle and five had a superficial rupture. Fourteen patients presented with continence disturbances: nine to solid or liquid faeces and five to flatus degree perineal ruptures in comparison with the outcome in controls with a vaginal delivery with-out anal sphincter damage, and to analyze obstet-ric risk factors for the development of anorectal complaints after anal sphincter damage complicat-ing vaginal delivery.

Obstetrical anal sphincter injuries (OASI), formerly referred to as “complete” or “incomplete” perineal tears, are a frequent complication of childbirth. They can lead to intestinal consequences (anal incontinence, ano-genital fistula) or sexual consequences (dyspareunia, genital pain).
Rupture of the anal sphincter is a well-known complication of vaginal delivery. Factors associated with rupture have included: a large fetus, primiparity, instrumental delivery, oxytocin stimulation, and abnormal presentation [1] .
A ruptured internal sphincter was repaired separately and the torn ends CONCLUSION: Anal sphincter injuries, many of them undiagnosed at the time of delivery, are common in primiparous females after vaginal delivery, especially if vacuum or forceps are used.
